This urinal from Falcon Water Technologies uses no water to flush away urine, saving an estimated 42,000 gallons of water each year. Urine flows into a cartridge containing a unique liquid sealant that floats on top of the liquid beneath it. The urine flows through the sealant, and then down the drain, as shown in the diagram below. The sealant provides an airtight barrier between urine and the restroom to prevent odors from escaping the drain. Because there is no handle to flush, this urinal also helps stop diseases spread by hand to surface contact. I was skeptical that this would work when I tried one at a local Whole Foods.
