This merry-go-round made by PlayPumps International is a fun water pump powered by children. The water is drawn from underground into a nearby water tower. The animation shows an overview of how it works. For a more detailed explanation, see this diagram. Because the pumps are located near schools, the children are staying in school instead of hauling water. US President Bush's wife Laura Bush stated a goal, in a speech at the 2006 Clinton Global Initiative annual meeting, of installing 4,000 of these pumps in sub-Saharan Africa by 2010. | |||||||||||
